Talk:Heat and energy considerations

Energy considerations

After participating SETI@Home for a few years (2000-2002) I noticed the laptop I bought in 2002, which had a variable speed processor, made a lot more noise when SETI@Home was running. It was so overwhelming that I decided to stop running the client.

However: recently I joined again, when Boinc is running (almost 24/7) I lock the processor cores to the lowest speed, which for sure decreases the number of calculations, but this way it is not causing a lot of extra energy consumption so in my eyes a more "green" approach. Also the laptop remains silent this way. And in fact, general tasks can be done without the need to change the processor speed.
