Talk:Boinccmd tool

From BOINC

Suggested rename

How about renaming this to "boinc_cmd tool"? Mostly so that links can be done without needing alternate text, just [[boinc_cmd tool]].

No comments... I'm moving it. Nicolas 17:20, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Where to run the boinccmd tool?

The document says: "If you run boinccmd in the same directory as the BOINC client, you don't need to supply either a host name or a password. Otherwise you need to supply (as password) the string stored in the file gui_rpc_auth.cfg in the client's data directory."

I believe it is a bit ambiguous: do I have to run the client

  • in the BOINC Programs directory (a.k.a. the same directory, where the BOINC client is placed), or rather
  • in the BOINC Data directory (where gui_rpc_auth.cfg is placed)?

I'd recommend changing the wording to "...run boinccmd in the BOINC client's data directory...", which would be true for both Windows and Unices.

(BTW, is this still necessary on Windows (as of 6.12.18)? I remember it was in the past, but now boinccmd seems to be able to find the gui_rpc_auth.cfg anyway. Using Registry?)
