Why would I need almost 4gig of mem to run a unit?

This refers to your hard drive space allocation in your account General preference.

I don't remember what the default setting is but as an example, I have my disk and memory usage set to
Use no more than 10 GB disk space
Leave at least 0.1 GB disk space free
Use no more than 10% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every 180 seconds
Use no more than 75% of total virtual memory

Note: You need to update the project on which you modify the General Preferences to inform Boinc of the changes.
