Hi,

The GPU on both my systems is always running at full speed and doesn't throttle while idle as it is supposed to.

I'm running malariacontrol.net with the latest build and drivers on these systems:

System 1 (laptop):
Vista 32-bit
Core 2 Duo SU9400
Switchable GFX Intel HD/ATI HD4330
(This system is setup to switch to intel onboard GFX when the GPU is unsolicited and the system runs on batteries)

And system 2:
Win 7 32-bit
Core i7 2600k
Gainward GTS 250 Green
(this card is supposed to throttle its clocks to save power while idle)

I can manually snooze the GPU through the taskbar - yet no amount of checking the 'use GPU never' or 'use GPU based on preferences' boxes in the preferences changes anything.

Hope somebody around here can help me fix this.

Best regards,
Niels

Have you set "Run based on preferences" in the Activity menu of BOINC manager (advanced view)?

When you do run "based on preferences" check in Windows Task Manager whether or not boinctray.exe is running. This is the BOINC idle detection program for Windows Vista and Windows 7. It starts from the registry (at Windows bootup), but not when BOINC itself starts (an oversight still to be fixed by the developers).

Is boinctray.exe not running? Then navigate to your BOINC programs directory (default at C:\Program Files\BOINC\) and double click on boinctray.exe .. it won't show with a window or anything that it started, you will have to check this through Windows Task Manager.

I have the BOINC managers set to "Run based on preferences" and boinctray is running as it should.

I'm contemplating to just solve using a 'pre-GPU' version of BOINC - Can anyone tell me which that is - and if there will be significant performance decrease in doing so?

You could of course also just turn the GPU off in the present BOINC. That way you can upgrade to newer, better versions without worrying too much about why the GPU doesn't do its work when it is supposed to. Although, you never said which BOINC versions you use, I just assume they're recent (6.10.58)?

To turn the GPU off, see my GPU FAQ.
