Message 112547 - Posted: 18 Aug 2023, 18:58:13 UTC

I have returned to Boinc after some time having resolved some computer problems. Now I am running Windows 11 (last used on Windows 7) and am unable to seemingly connect to anything. When trying to connect to a project, it will ask my login info, then will prompt me with "Login Failed". This happens with any project I try to connect to. I have logged onto the sites which I wish to connect (ie: Milkyway@Home) to verify my login credentials, and was successful. I also made a Science United account to see if that would work.

In the event log trying to connect to Science United we return "No account found". When try to connect to any project as above with the login failed, the event log only shows "Fetching configuration file from [whatever project]".

I have verified through windows firewall that boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe are allowed through. I think I have allowed access the proper way through my network router (though I did get a bit confused and don't remember having to do so in the past).

I must be missing something, please help.

First off, Science United is an ACCOUNT MANAGER and doesn't know about any previous accounts you might of had at the various projects.

If you had an account at the various projects previously you were registered and attached to you would need to use the login and password from those projects.

If you forget your password for a project and still have same email address, you can request the recovery information sent to you.

Edit to add... If you want to use Science United to decide what projects to attach to, you would need to register and create an account. By using Science United you will not get credits on your individual accounts and have no direct control of what individual projects you want to run in BOINC.

Also, please tell us which BOINC version you use.
And check things like VPN, proxy, corporate firewall.

I understand what it is, was just trying to get something connected and could not connect to that. Thought it would be good to include it was not able to connect to that either.

Ah yes, thank you. Version 7.22.2 64bit is what I have installed. I am not using a VPN currently and this is my home network so no corporate nonsense to contend with. On my router I set up the ports that a quick search seemed to indicate boinc and boincmgr utilize to pass through to the specific computer I am trying to run on.

You shouldn't need to do that, as ports 80 (http) and 443 (https) are standard passed through on any router, else your browsers can't connect to the internet. Any other port number, like 31416, is used for communication between the BOINC client and the manager. This port can be set in your Windows firewall, but only if you have trouble connecting the client to the manager.

Can you exit & restart BOINC, then try to make contact to a project and post the log messages (CTRL+Shift+E) from start to after the failed connection?

Can you open BOINC Manager, Options, Event Log Options, check http_debug, Save.
Then try to add a project.
Then copy and post the whole log.

This is quite a big log, don't worry. We need it all.

Is there anything more that the log wrote? As we're still in the middle of negotiating. BOINC is sending information to the project and receiving information, like a cookie.

I think the problem lies here.

8/19/2023 07:50:16 PM | | Libraries: libcurl/8.0.1-DEV Schannel zlib/1.2.13
8/19/2023 07:50:29 PM | | [http] [ID#2] Info: schannel: disabled automatic use of client certificate

The host is not allowing the default project SSL certificate to be used and then falls back on trying to set a cookie which is disallowed.

I'm not really a network tech, but those words sound like they belong in that order lol. So how do I go about rectifying that?

The schannel message is a complete red herring. It's the default solution to the old problems of BOINC (central) not noticing that one or more of the SSL certificates in boinc's ca-bundle.crt file had expired and needed to have been replaced at the last update.

Your next action should have been to run the 'attach to project' wizard, and follow the steps with the email and password appropriate to the project - not your BOINC name/password. Unfortunately, those steps are not reported in the BOINC message log until the whole process is complete. We are completely blindsided here, and you'll just have to note the steps you've taken and do your best to describe them (and the responses) afterwards. Or screenshots (of the wizard's window, not the whole darn cinema screen - Alt-prtscrn) of anything you want help with.

Your next action should have been to run the 'attach to project' wizard, and follow the steps with the email and password appropriate to the project - not your BOINC name/password. Unfortunately, those steps are not reported in the BOINC message log until the whole process is complete.
True. Make absolutely sure you type the password correctly, as I am not sure if BOINC will give an error message if that's wrong. AFAIK it gives a generic "cannot connect" message.

I usually type in my password into Notepad and copy it again from there for each paste. Or, since I have all my logins stored in a password manager, copy it directly from there.

Well...... I was taking literally click-by-click screenshots of the steps I took to verify all my information and log into a project through Boinc account manager. I got a login failed message again, got really angry and walked away, then came back, clicked back, re-pasted my password and user email from the same source...... and it logged in. I then proceeded to log in to all the projects I wanted with 0 issue.

IDFK

Thank you everyone who offered assistance, it was greatly appreciated.

🥳🎂
Congratulations 👏🏼

A space before or after the password will also give trouble.

But that said, let's put it down to finicky computers. 😂
