It looks like I have to set a switch between tasks number, but I think it leaves some programs in a waiting to run state. Is it possible to have all of my programs running?

It would be nice for people trying to help you if they had some information about your setup, which project(s) you run and what you are trying to do. Now it isn't clear. See https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=8600 for what kind of information we're looking for.

My system is as follows:
BOINC Manager 7.6.33 (x64)
WxWidgets Ver. 3.0.1
Windows 10 Home Ver. 1607
OS build 14393.969
Processor Intel Core i7-6800K @ 3.4GHz
32 GB RAM
Using GPU full time as well.

Programs loaded:
Atlas@home: currently no data to run.
Cosmology@home: Running 12 files concurrently right now.
Einstein@home: Running 1 file but will shut down and go into a "waiting to run"
state at the "switch between tasks" time.
Milkyway@home: currently running 1 file but will shut down and go into a "waiting to run"
state at the "switch between tasks" time.
Asteroids@home: Currently in waiting to run state.

Question:
Can the BOINC Manager be configured to have all 5 of my programs processing files at the same time. I have a 6 core processor and running these programs is all it does besides run Kaspersky Internet Security and Malwarebytes to keep the system clean.

It appears as though I can only run 2 maybe 3 programs at the same time. Is this a setup issue or a system limitation.

You have an i7 with 6 cores and hyperthreading, meaning it can run 12 threads at the same time.
Which it is doing, as according to you it's running 12 Cosmology tasks.

You have 'a GPU' as well, without saying what kind of. If this is the built-in Intel GPU in the CPU, all of them lack in the solo crunching department and do better if you allow one CPU core to be free to help them out (set Use at most N% of CPUs to 99%, which means all but one).
If it's an Nvidia, AMD or other brand GPU, you'll have to detail what brand and model it is and with what drivers and where it got the drivers from.

The GPU is an NVIDIA and it does get used by programs that can use it.
Is there any way I can tell Cosmology@home to run less tasks so other programs do not have to wait to run, or is that a question for the folks at their site?

Thanks,

Mike.

BTW, love your picture. Very sad to see her off the air.

Can I use the project preferences ability to give cosmology@home a lower priority so it does not try and run so many tasks giving other programs a chance to run?

Don't know if this is the problem but when i look at my Tasks I see that 3 of my 4 programs all say ready to start (1CPU + 1 NVIDIA GPU).
I assume this means that these 3 programs all require GPU power plus a CPU. Maybe this is why I can't get them all to run at the same time.

Yes indeed.
The GPUs need a CPU to feed them data, and to retrieve the results after. How much of a CPU varies, so one CPU may suffice for several GPUs.

Do as Jord said in his last post, and reserve one CPU for the use of the GPUs.

Thanks Les. Sorry for the confusion. Last time I ran BOINC was 1 program many many years ago. Trying to understand all the latest tech and programs. So will my NVIDIA GPU be able to do processing for more than one GPU required program at a time? It is a brand new GEFORCE GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. I have no idea where that stands on the compendium of GPU processing. So do I just set CPU numbers to 99% as noted and see if other GPU requiring programs start processing?

Thanks.

Mike.

1 GPU = 1 task at a time.

A GPU has lots of processors inside, all of which work in parallel on different parts of a single task, thus getting a result faster than on a CPU.
But only for problems that can BE parallel processed.

Well I answered my own question. I still can not run more than 1 GPU required program at a time. But they are cycling from one to another as they finish a task.

As Les said, the GPU can by default only run one task at a time but all of the processors inside the GPU will run that task in parallel. Thus speeding up the calculations enormously. In comparison, the CPU will only run 1 task per core.

Some projects do allow to run multiple tasks on the GPU at once, these will then be swapped in and out between them. Whether that's possible with the project of choice is something you'd have to ask the project through their forums.

Leaving one CPU core free will speed up calculations on the GPU, but for those projects that have multi-threaded applications. As these may require all of the CPU threads, and by limiting the CPU to all but one, these may stop. Milkyway has multi-threaded applications, how to set that up is best asked on their forums.
