this topic is found on all / most of the projects that use virtual box . there seams to be no agreed upon solution. the most common suggestion is to go to a 5.1.** build of Vbox but some cautioning not to go too new.

the message i left on the cosmology forum

HI

about a week ago i upgraded to, VirtualBox Graphical User Interface
Version 5.1.14 r112924 (Qt5.6.2) and am now running work units for several projects that use VB successfully.

is there any reason the installer is still using an older version? I realise you have no control over what the BOINC developers release.

Download BOINC + VirtualBox
for Windows 64-bit (91.56 MB)
BOINC 7.6.33, VirtualBox 5.0.18

perhaps from you, in your position as a project, developer you can influence the BOINC developers to include the current VB in the installer.

We do forward issues brought up here to the developers. I'm sure the bundled VirtualBox will be updated in the next release. When will there be a next release is a different matter though.

I attempted an Install of BOINC 7.6.33 with VirtualBox 5.0.18 (Win-64)

After installing BOINC, it gets to the point where I OK Installing VirtualBox
It Downloads VirtualBox, and somewhere along the way, it just hangs, and I could wait forever...
At this point, my Internet Connections (Wired and Wireless) are Disabled, and it looks like the VirtualBox is my only hope to get to the Internet... If it ever finishes...
I cannot Uninstall VirtualBox (says previous Install must complete), and I cannot Uninstall BOINC (since it never finished anyways)

This is the SECOND time this has happened - After a few weeks, I tried again today, and of course, it hijacks my I.P. Addressses and I cannot do anything but Solitaire!

I need to Uninstall ANYTHING to do with this, and maybe next time, I will try without the VirtualBox - For now, I have TWO PCs I cannot BOINC with, so please, HAAAAALLLLP!

If you don't participate in any projects that use VirtualBox you can download the installer that comes with only BOINC. If you want to install VirtualBox too you can download its installer from VirtualBox' website. Maybe the stand-alone installer works better.

VirtualBox' installer temporarily disconnects the computer from network. Their installer warns about that and BOINC's installer should too. I'll file a bug report.

That sounds pretty weird it taking over your IP, more like a virus or worm. Have you given your system a good scan?

You might try a good Uninstaller? IObit's version seems to work pretty good: http:/www.iobit.com There's System Mechanic too: http://www.iolo.com/downloads/download-system-mechanic/ --- It says free, but I think it's like a 30 day trial.

Those will search out registry entries along with accompanying files.

Also, have you cleaned out your temp folders? If not, pick up CCleaner free of charge (you only pay if you want priority support and auto updates) which also is pretty safe for doing a light registry cleanup: http;//www.piriform.com/ccleaner
(Some folks have reported issues after running with it, but most people never do as CCleaner doesn't do a deep clean but it does a real good job of leftover or orphaned entries.)

You might also Defrag your hard drive after you do a cleanup. Search for MyDefrag. It's a lightweight, no frills defragmenter.
